An ergonomic order picking bin that is durable and fits perfectly under their existing warehouse shelving. With these wishes, a world famous sports brand came to Engels.
In the old situation, cardboard boxes were used for the storage of their goods, which broke quickly and did not work well for the employees. This was not in line with the sustainable objectives of one of the largest and most environmentally friendly logistics centers in Belgium. On the recommendation of the racking supplier, they contacted Engels for the development of a new order picking container for under their racks.
The ideal storage bin for order picking
During a few introductory meetings, it was discussed what the ideal storage bin should meet. Naturally, they wanted optimal use of space, but the tray also had to work nicely and be flexible in use. After all, it is possible that the order picking bins will also be used for another application or another product group in the future. Considering the environment, it makes sense to reuse the bins for other products. There was also a desire for a specific type of wheels under the box.
Engels' R&D department worked out the discussed requirements and wishes into a concrete design. Pulling the container with the desired wheels, it soon became apparent that other wheels would provide more volume, while the space required remained the same. This more efficient container was developed into a prototype in consultation. For added flexibility, all bins have a slot that fits a divider.
The prototype was extensively tested in the relevant warehouse. The client was very satisfied with the design. The custom dividers and storage bins were then produced using the customer specific molds. The logo, one of the most recognizable logos in the world, is embossed on the front and sides of the box.

With an eye for the environment
The storage box is very durable. It is made from recycled plastic and will last for years. At the end of its life, the bin can be 100% recycled into raw material for new products. This makes it a completely circular product.
In addition, the bin is produced locally and fits very efficiently on pallets. Transport costs and CO2 emissions were therefore minimal and the customer had the bins quickly at home.
Engels also guarantees the return of bins and separators delivered at the end of their life for recycling.
